Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by the park rangers on the guidelines and safety regulations for chimpanzee trekking. Following the briefing, you’ll be assigned an experienced ranger guide who will lead you into the ancient Nyungwe Forest in search of one of its habituated chimpanzee communities.
As you hike through the dense rainforest, keep an eye out for the park’s remarkable biodiversity. Nyungwe is home to 13 species of primates, and during your trek, you may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, vervet monkeys, and a variety of colorful forest birds and butterflies. The forest itself is rich in unique flora, making the trek an enjoyable experience even before locating the chimpanzees.
Once the chimpanzees are found, you will be allowed to spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watching these intelligent primates as they groom one another, play, feed, communicate, and move effortlessly through the forest is a truly fascinating wildlife experience. While sightings are highly successful, it is important to remember that chimpanzees are wild animals, and their movements can never be guaranteed with absolute certainty.
After the trek, return to your lodge for a well-deserved lunch and some time to relax.
In the afternoon, enjoy the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk, one of Rwanda’s most exciting attractions. Suspended approximately 70 metres above the forest floor, the canopy walkway offers spectacular panoramic views of the rainforest and provides an excellent opportunity to spot birds, monkeys, and other wildlife from a unique perspective.
Alternatively, if you prefer a more relaxed afternoon, you may unwind at the lodge or participate in one of the complimentary activities available. Please inform your guide in advance should you wish to arrange any optional activities.
